Octavarium adalah album ke delapan dari Band Progressive Metal Amerika, Dream Theater. Dirilis tanggal 7 Juni 2005 bersama Atlantic Records. Direkam antara September 2004 sampai Februari 2005, di The Hit Factory yang terletak di New York yang juga studio rekaman dari Michael Jackson,Madonna, U2 dan John Lennon. Dengan Octavarium, band memutuskan membuat ‘a classic Dream Theater album’. Mengambil inspirasi dari varian yang mereka senangi dan mencoba membuat musiknya yang tak terlalu rumit. Ini adalah album pertama mereka yang memfiturkan orkestra dalam lagu mereka. Struktur albumnya didasari oleh konsep bahasa musik oktaf.

Album ini pernah menempati peringkat lima dalam chart musik di Finlandia, Italia, Swedia dan masuk dalam Top Ten Chart di Belanda, Jepang, dan Norwegia. Mendapat reaksi positif dan pujian dari beberapa industri musik, juga beberapa kritik kepada penulis lagu yang dianggap tidak konsekuen. Dream Theater mempromosikan album ini dengan menggelar konser panjang tahunan, dengan mayoritas konser berakhir hingga tiga jam dan dengan set yang berbeda setiap malam konsernya. Tur ini berakhir di Radio City Music Hall bersama orkestra ; pertunujukan ini juga direkam dan dirilis sebagai album Live dan Video konser yang berjudul Score. Mereka juga menjadi bintang tamu dalam konser Gigantour di Amerika Utara bersama Megadeth.

Band ini mengulang karya orkestranya kembali yang pernah ada di “overture” dalam album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, tetapi saat itu direkam dari keyboard. Trek seperti "The Answer Lies Within", "Sacrificed Sons" dan "Octavarium" menjadi kali pertama Dream Theater bekerja sama dengan orkestra yang dikenal dengan Octavarium Orchestra yang dikonduktori oleh Jamshied Sharifi(yang juga bersekolah di Berklee College of Music bersama John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy dan John Myung).

Arti Dari Semua Simbol

Melihat sejarah tentang Octavarium, kita akan bahas sedikit. Dikenal oleh orang dalam buku sejarah yang dibuat oleh orang Vatikan yang disebut sebagai Octavarium Romanum. Buku ini memuat tentang hari raya katolik dan terdapat catatan arti dari angka lima dan delapan. Disebutkan di sini karena isinya memuat ajaran dibawah ajaran Sixtus V (1585-1590) sampai pada Clement VIII (1502-1605).

Adapun symbol dari angka lima dan delapan bagi Dream Theater adalah :

- octavarium – lima suku kata dan ejaan, album studio DT yang ke delapan

- ada lima anggota dalam Dream Theater

- total delapan anggota yang telah bermain di Dream Theater (tidak termasuk Chris Collins, karena dia hanya bagian dari Majesty)

- DT mempunyai lima album Live (sampai pada album ini)

- DT dibentuk pada tahun 1985

- Tur dunia Octavarium dimulai dari festival eropa yang mencakup 8 negara, yaitu Swiss, Belanda, Swedia, Italia, Perancis, Spanyol, Austria dan Belgia

- Lima part (dalam negative time) dari delapan lagu menggunakan persenjataan Mike yang bernama “Hammer of The Gods”, adalah perlengkapan drumnya yang ke delapan dalam karirnya.

Delapan Bandul Dan Lima Burung

Di dalam cover kaset terdapat gambar delapan buah bandul dan lima buah burung. Coba perhatikan dengan seksama. Bandul didominasi dengan warna cerah, yang berarti putih, dan burung berwarna hitam. Jika kita urutkan dari bandul sebelah kiri dengan urutan lagu, kita bisa menyimpulkan, bandul pertama adalah lagu pertama, burung pertama adalah bridge menuju lagu ke dua (lihat negative time di atas) dan bandul ke dua adalah lagu ke dua, seterusnya lalu diakhiri dengan bandul terakhir yang memuat symbol Majesty dan dibawah bandul terdapat tulisan Octavarium yang berarti akhir lagu adalah Octavarium yang berada di urutan ke delapan dari Track List.

Dua Anak Kecil

Di cover ini juga terdapat dua orang anak kecil, yang sedang berbicara dengan alat komunikasinya yang terbuat dari kaleng (di Indonesia dikenal dengan ‘telpon-telponan’ dari bekas gelas plastik air mineral) dan yang satu lagi sedang mendengarkan. Akan terus begitu, jika kita bisa memikirkan aktifitas kedua anak tadi yang bisa berarti akhir itu berada di awal, seperti lingkaran yang tak ada putusnya, sama dengan konsep album ini. Jika kita perhatikan dengan seksama, jari seorang anak yang berbicara terlihat lima, sedangkan yang mendengarkan terlihat hanya tiga. Itu juga menandakan jumlah lagu yang ada di album ini.

Domino

Dibalik lirik “The Answer Lies Within” terdapat dua buah domino, yang satu bernilai lima, dan yang satu bernilai delapan. Tiga burung juga terlihat di situ, yang menandakan Charlie Dominici, Kevin Moore, dan Derek Sherenian, dua yang terbang adalah keyboardis dan satu yang ‘nemplok’ di Domino adalah sang vokalis (semua yang disebutkan adalah ‘ex’ atau ‘alumni’ atau ‘bekas’).

Laba-laba Dan Labirin Segi Delapan

Laba-laba berkaki delapan terperangkap dalam labirin segi delapan. Gambar ini terdapat di belakang lirik “These Walls” yang menggambarkan laba-laba yang terperangkap di labirin yang mustahil dapat ditembus jalan keluarnya. Di dalam labirin terdapat delapan jalan masuk dan delapan dinding pembatas jalan atau dinding ‘gang mentok’ juga lima buah jalur.

Gurita Dan Ikan

Gambar gurita (yang aslinya berkaki delapan) dan lima ekor ikan kecil, juga papan rambu yang bersimbol Majesty terdapat di belakang lirik “Never Enough” dan “Sacrified Sons”.

Skema Segi Delapan Dan Bintang

Terdapat gambar skema bintang bersudut lima di dalam persegi delapan dengan skala 5:8 yang diberi judul ‘figure 8’ dalam dimensi 29’ 6,75” kotak, dan segitiga yang potongannya 8’ 8” masuk dalam lebar dinding 5’ 8”. Empat buah pintu masuk yang hanya terbuka di sisi bawah. Mungkin ini juga menandakan bahwa jika kita memasuki pintu itu, maka pintu keluarnya akan sama dengan pintu masuk. Kembali kepada “this story ends where it began”.

Cover Belakang

Di cover CD belakang terdapat track list lagu yang tertulis di tuts piano. Adalah list track dan foto personil di tiap tuts hitam. Dibalik gambar itu terdapat gambar bola delapan biliar yang bersimbol Majesty.

KONSEP

Urutan lagu diambil dari bahasa musik oktaf ; setiap oktaf berisi delapan Naturals dan limaAccidentals. Portnoy bersugesti dalam membuat dasar konsep album. Ketika menulis lagu, mereka selalu membuat setiap lagu berbeda kunci / kord. Efek suara ditempatkan di tengah lagu untuk menyambung lagu ke lagu ; contohnya, “The Root Of All Evil” berbasis kord F, diikuti lagu “The Answer Lies Within” yang berbasis kord G, yang lalu disambung di tengah kedua lagu itu dengan basis kord F#. lirik dan judul lagu di album ini diambil dari konsep album ini sendiri. Portnoy menyebutkan “The Root Of All Evil” (diambil dari bahasa musik root yang berarti awalan) dan “Octavarium” (yang dalam bahasa musik oktaf berarti naik 7 tingkat atau tingkat ke delapan dari tangga nada atau terakhir dalam penaikan tangga nada) sebagai dua contoh dari beberapa konsep album ini.

Menceritakan kisah yang mirip dengan film ‘Awakening’. Sesi ini juga gambaran dari Full Circle, diawali dengan catatonic sleep dan diakhiri di Full Circle.

Teori lain, dimana James La Brie selalu cek kesehatan oleh dokter pribadinya sebelum melakukan tur.

Di sini kita bisa dengar Mike menyebutkan skala derajat sebelum bait. Setiap bait adalah kesimpulan dari lagu di album ini dan klip tentang lagu ini. Penjudulan sesi ini disampul dalam skala derajat dan tampilan dari lagu dengan sesi ‘negative time’ dan mencocokan ke progresi not dalam oktaf (interval dalam bahasa musik adalah jarak antara dua not atau pitch). Intervals juga bisa diartikan urutan angka. Akhir sesi lagu ini diakhiri dengan “step after step, we try controlling our fate” bersama mike yang menyebutkan “octave”. Bisa mempunyai dua arti, bisa mengendalikan hidup kita dan jalan bersama takdir, yang keduanya berarti rencana dan perbuatan, atau catatan musik ekspresi terakhir Dream Theater yang mencoba mengendalikan hidup mereka dengan musik yang mereka buat. Lagu ini diakhiri dengan kord yang sama di awal lagu, lebih menegaskan bahwa “the story ends where it began”.

The Root of All Evil dimulai dengan part 6 sedangkan Octavarium diakhiri dengan part 5. logikanya, jika part 5 diteruskan akan menuju part 6 dimana part 6 ada di awal lagu dalam album ini. Kesimpulannya, “album ini gak tahu letak awalnya juga dimana akhirnya, jadi, puter aja terus sampe playernya jebol”.
